The phoenix feather featured here has been reclaimed from one of southern California's historical wildfires know as the 2019 Valley Fire.
Measures 10 1/2" Long x 2" Wide x 1/2" Thick.
Bright blue turquoise and deep green malachite stones have been inlaid into natural wood cracks to contrast against the dark fiery red inner heartwood grain and black wildfire burn marks.
This feather is banded with a fine black leather to hang and display as a wall art piece.
The heat from the wildfire this wood was burned in was so extreme that it literally killed, burned and dried the wood in an instant. In that process cracks were formed in the wood adding to the aesthetics that are characteristic of natural bird feathers.
Manzanita is a tree that grows all around southern California and is so exotic it is protected by federal law and is illegal to cut it down without proper permission from either land owners or state and federal officials.
Manzanita wood is also a very hard and dense wood so it naturally lasts lifetimes and offers up a glass like shine when finished. Because of the density and uniqueness of manzanita it also offers the most beautiful and exotic wood grain unmatched by any other wood in the world. Typically the inner heart wood grain is a deep fiery red similar to the intense wildfire flames that originally engulfed the wood.
The meaning of the phoenix is deeply rooted in ancient Egyptian, Greek, Arab, Chinese, Japanese and Native American cultures and mythology as well as Hinduism, Judaism and Christianity as a symbol of renewal, resurrection, longevity, strength, transformation, clarity, rebirth, expression and protection.
Manzanita phoenix feathers make great gifts for those whom have lost loved ones, experienced tragedy in some form and are trying to move on, heal and transform themselves from adversity and tragedy.
Many of these phoenix feathers have been purchased by the local Kumeyaay band of indians here at Viejas indian reservation and given as cerremonial gifts to their tribal elders in their stepping down and retiring from their council.

Manzanita Wood Phoenix Feather with Blue Turquoise, Green Malachite Inlay
- Welcome to the exotic collection of Manzanita wood phoenix feathers!
Each feather is a one of a kind handmade art sculpture good fortune totem to be hung in the home, workplace, healing studio and sacred spaces to represent good fortune and used for ceremonies, smudging and working in medicine rituals.
Each feather is a reclaimed work of art sculpture with a history!
Every feather has been patiently handcarved from cuts of Manzanita trees that have been burned and reclaimed from various southern California wildfires.
It was the 2003 Cedar Fire that I was burned out in and that serendipitously connected me to work with this beautiful high desert mountain manzanita tree.
Each feather highlights original wildfire burn marks along the outer edges of the wood. The "live edge" sides of each feather have been intricately handcarved to mimic the natural curves that are common in bird feathers.
Natural wood cracks from the burning and drying process of the wood have all been filled in with a powdered black char mix made from the organic charred wood powder from each piece of burned wood.
Specific cracks and holes in the wood have been inlaid with various semi precious stones to compliment the deep manzanita wood grain striations and character.
A beautiful bright blue sleeping beauty turquoise, deep green malachite has been inlaid into some amber toned non tarnishing copper set into the wood and compliments nicely amongst this deep fiery red and signature manzanita wood heartwood grain and the black burned wood.
Sleeping Beauty Turquoise is revered and highly sought after due to its pure sky blue color which shows very little to no veining or webbing which is why it has been chosen to highlight this custom piece.
It’s pure color and natural strength make Sleeping Beauty Turquoise characteristics a favorite for jewelry makers and artists around the world. It is one of the most prized forms of turquoise for jewelry and adornment.
Every stone, chunk and shard of the turquoise and malachite along with the copper has been patiently inlaid by hand one piece at a time.
Manzanita phoenix feathers are each individually hand sanded down in a specific way to offer a complete comfortable tactile smooth wood surface.
Eco friendly penetrating oils are heat sanded into each piece so that the oil is seeped deeply into the wood to seal it for a long happy life.
The finished result is a piece of manzanita that is very smooth, comfortable and meditative to rub and show off.
Most feathers are strung on reclaimed leather banding that accommodates for hanging but some feathers can be finished without any banding and simply used for ceremonies or as placement decorative symbolic art.
Custom requests for feathers in specific sizes with or without banding or Inlay are always welcome.
Each feather is signed by the artist.
Each feather comes to you gift wrapped with both a custom tag briefly describing the spiritual and symbolic meaning of the phoenix and a care and feeding tag.
***This one of a kind piece also comes with it's own certificate of authenticity and is solely for the purchase of the collector and not to be purchased for resale.
